I never really liked the look or idea of a PRS guitar – why would anyone pay $3300 for a guitar? Even worse, a production guitar! To be fair, I was young & ignorant…
This all changed when I had the opportunity to play my friend’s (he had awesome parents) PRS Custom 24 in Faded Whale Blue. Before then, I don’t think I would have ever paid more than $1000 for a guitar. Now, there’s nothing wrong with guitars that don’t cost an arm and a leg, but I definitely feel it’s worth spending the money on a PRS…
Well, I’m a guy that predominantly plays metal, but somehow his CU24 (which I had assumed was always an “old man” guitar) delivered the tones I wanted, even tuned down to drop B. Until the first time I played a CU24, I had always found mahogany to be disgustingly bassy and unusable for metal. Turns out I had just been playing guitars with poorly dried, low quality mahogany.
I was basically saying all steak is bad without ever trying a good cut of steak! Pretty embarassing, and I was quickly eating my own words.
Other than the tones being exactly what I wanted, his Custom 24 was immaculately built with no attention to detail spared. When I picked it up, I could tell someone poured genuine passion into creating it. Plus, the figured maple top on it was one of the most beautiful things I had ever seen. What does this have to do with this guitar? Well…
Many years later, when we opened the Wired Guitarist Community Guitar Store and we signed on with PRS, one of the first guitars I made sure we ordered was a Faded Whale Blue Custom 24, with hope of capturing that same transformative moment I had first experienced many years ago when playing my friend’s Custom 24.
I’m glad to say that this Faded Whale Blue Custom 24 delivered the experience I was craving, and then some. The same ability to deliver beautiful & brutal tones with ease, the same lightweight mahogany that defies stereotypical mahogany tones, and a gorgeous top in Faded Whale Blue.
The Custom 24 is a modern classic for good reason and by far the most recognizable PRS model. Originally designed to be a marriage of the two most iconic guitars of all time, the Custom 24 has a distinct and beautiful voice all its own. Featuring the smooth as butter PRS tremolo system, rock solid locking tuners, Paul Reed Smith designed 85/15 pickups with 5 incredibly unique settings, and absolutely unmatched looks and playability, the Custom 24 is an incredibly versatile guitar sure to meet the needs of even the most discerning guitarists.
